Student Leadership

Prefects (Year 10)
The school Prefect is the highest student leadership position that a student can hold within the school. Students are chosen through a rigorous application process open to Year 10 students only. Prefects are appointed following applications and interviews with the Head of Year or Senior Leadership Team.

Prefects have a range of responsibilities ranging from doing lunchtime canteen duty, supporting at key events throughout the year and acting as ambassadors for the school. They help to support positive behaviour around the school and are seen as role models in their everyday interactions.

The Head of Year will coordinate the Prefects and meet with them regularly. 

House Captains (Sixth Form)
The primary role of House captains is to encourage student participation in sports, PE and House related events. They organise after House events and keep a running total of House points. To become a member of this group, students need to show an interest and aptitude for the House system. The Head of Year will coordinate the House captains and meet with them regularly.

House Vice-Captains (Sixth Form)
The primary role of House vice captains is to encourage student participation in sports, PE and House related events. They help to organise House events and keep a running total of House points. To become a member of this group, students need to show an interest and aptitude for the House system. 

Sports Captains (Year 10)
The primary role of the Sports captains is to help run extra-curricular sports clubs during lunchtime and after school. Working closely with the Head of PE they will be expected to also help with House events and sports day.

School Council (Year 7-13)
School Council is a democratically elected body which is composed of representatives from each tutor group. It is the main forum for student voice in the school. Each year group work to develop key focus areas of our school community, meeting with members of the Leadership Group to present ideas. The group meets on a half termly basis with the member of staff. Ideas and progress of the group is fed back to the rest of the student body through form time and assemblies.

Peer mentors (Year 10-13)
Peer mentors are selected from students in Year 9 and 10. Their role is to act as mentors/buddies to students in Year 7 and 8 who may be vulnerable or identified by Head of Year as needing support. To ensure the selection process is rigorous, students must complete an application before partaking in training to ensure they are equipped with the necessary skills to be a good Peer Mentor. 

Duke of Edinburgh (Years 9/10)
The Duke of Edinburgh scheme is run by an appointed member of staff. Students are selected by a process of application. The scheme helps develop leadership through a programme of activities in four skill areas; physical activity, volunteering, developing a skill and an expedition.  Students meet regularly with staff in school to review their progress towards completing the award and to prepare for the expedition section of the programme. 

BBC School News Report Team (Year 7, 8, 9)
News Report Team have responsibility for writing articles for the school’s INFORM magazine and ‘Shout Out’ newsletter.  Students from year 7-9 are encouraged to participate and contribute their own creative ideas. The group is run through the English department/Head of Year and students meet on regular basis. Students will also participate in the BBC School News Report day in March.

Interact (Year 7 - 13)
Interact is a club for young people ages 12-18 who want to join together to tackle the issues in their community that they care most about.  Interact lead the school in terms of raising awareness of local, national and international charity events. Students on this body will ensure that all students are aware of National events like Children in Need, Red Nose day as well as raising awareness of other issues such as Mental Health.

Form Time Leaders (Year 7 - 10)
Form Time Leaders take on various leadership roles within their form group including presentations, developing group literacy and administrative tasks. 

Stonewall Champions (Year 7-13)
Our Stonewall School Champions play a crucial role in our community in celebrating diversity and inclusion. 

Digital Leaders (Year 8-10)
Digital Leaders are certified Childnet e-safety experts (www.childnet.com), who promote effective internet safety across all year groups by delivering assemblies and presentations. 

Language Leaders (Year 7-10)
An enthusiastic group who are passionate about raising the profile of languages in our school community. The group meet weekly and celebrate their love for languages by planning excellent days such as ‘European Day of Languages’. 

Citizens UK (Year 7-10)
The Northwood Citizens Group are champions for social change. They listen to the troubles of, and issues faced by our school community and then design and deliver powerful campaigns for change. 

Recycling Group (Year 7-10)
The Recycling Group’s main aim is to educate the school community about the environment, encouraging peers to be more environmentally friendly by recycling and being more conscious of their carbon footprint. 

Youth Travel Ambassadors (Year 7-10)
The Northwood Youth Travel Ambassadors promote good behaviour on public transport and active travel to and from school by delivering talks and assemblies and running competitions.
